‘An explosion of spices on a smoldering, ambery base of woods, incense, smoke, and leather, SCORPIO RISING, like the astrological sign it’s inspired by, is beautiful but dangerous, magnetic but formidable. And very, very addictive. Are you ready to play with fire?’- Eris
‘Scorpio Rising, with its overdosed cocktail of spices, is a dangerous, spellbinding beauty that will envelop you in its glowing, magnetic sensuality.’ – Antoine Lie (Perfumer)
Whereas Ma Bete and Mxxx. seem to be the ones often touted as daring fragrances from Eris; the one that gives me most of a challenge is Scorpio Rising, well, for some minutes. It wins me over quite quickly and it more of a flash in the pan than a serious challenger.
For me this opening is all about burnt spices. You get the peppers and cardamom, and probably a relatively big dose of immortelle in here, but they do not come across in the most conventional way. Instead, there’s a smokiness and a metallic quality to Scorpio Rising that pushes it into daring territory. Add to that, a general green tinge and it definitely strays away from my usual taste.
This reminds me a bit of the drydown of Gallivant Accra, although in Scorpio Rising it transitions the other way around. The opening reminds me of bell peppers, slightly slick, leathery, vegetal.
It grows a lot smoother within the first hour though, making for a much more easy to wear and even something that I could see myself picking to wear, if I had less options available to me. It won’t be joining the ranks of my favorites from Eris (Mxxx., Ma Bete and Delta of Venus have to be my top 3), but it’s another fun one to have tested.
