‘To me, the 1980’s conjure up images of bold fashion with big shoulder pads, mullets, catchy synth music and neon hued interiors. The decade had intense energy, confidence and a relentless optimism that inspired me to create Ultra. At the heart of Ultra the narcissus shines. Its rich and radiant character brings to life the vibrant spirit of the 1980’s. At the same me the flower’s name and its narcotic and intoxicating aroma also hint at something darker as they recall the Greek myth of Narcissus – a cautionary tale that was most likely lost on the hedonists of the decade…’ – Hiram Green
This is a brilliant fragrance and my favorite Hiram since… a while back at least; I prefer it over the last few releases of his. It reminds me in ways of several of his older works, ranging from Moon Bloom to Slowdive, as well as the later Philtre. With an emphasis on a Slowdive-like sweetness.
Bold florals with an almost metallic, but flesh edge to them. I wouldn’t say daring, but it smells a bit indolic throughout for sure. One of my favorite discoveries (although only smelled briefly) last year was Angelos Creations Olfactives Narkissos and this Ultra comes at you in a similar direction.
Hay, in-your-face flowers with a healthy dose of a honeyed quality. There’s no honey or beeswax in the note breakdown, but I wouldn’t completely disagree with calling this a honey-floral profile. Which of course ties in nicely with the hay-tobacco-ish base. The drydown really reminds me of Slowdive.
Hiram Green is one of the best indie perfumers working in my experience and Ultra is a return to top form.
