      MOON BLOOM (2013) • HIRAM GREEN🔺, ScentAdvice

‘Moon Bloom takes its inspiration from tuberose, a flower with a unique soft and creamy aroma that is often referred to as the mistress of the night. Not only because it releases its scent during the night, but also because of its intense aphrodisiac properties. Moon Bloom is an exploration of the brief life of the tuberose. The fresh green smell of the stem and leaves hardly prepare you for a narcotically opulent heart full of sweet and spicy white flowers. As the fragrance dries down, the scent ripens into a thick, moist and almost tropical base of creamy coconut and warm resins. Moon Bloom was my debut fragrance and remains one of my most popular creations.’ – Hiram Green

Hiram Green is a house I greatly appreciate. The only release from the house that I don’t like is the heady Dilettante. Which brings us to Moon Bloom… a fragrance that I really appreciate on one hand, but that was also too heady for my taste.

Moon Bloom is a big fragrance. It’s the loudest and strongest from Hiram, next to Hyde. It’s white florals in one of the most indolic way that I’d smelled at the time. It takes me back to Amouage Opus IX and it makes Opus I look like a kid’s perfume. There’s a coconut hidden underneath the strong florals, which I picked up on from time to time and that’s the most enjoyable part of this fragrance for me. It’s a bit spicy, but it feels attached to the florals.

As if someone sprinkled pepper on a bowl of decomposing flower petals in the blazing sun. There’s sweetness, but equal parts sour and green, especially at first. It does get impressively creamy, which is another standout feature. Some wafts I found to be pleasant, but the intoxicating, almost syrupy florals start wearing me down.

As with many of Hiram’s compositions, there’s a thick scent cloud with heavy sillage. In the case of Moon Bloom it also projects, but it’s the sillage and density that makes for a very ‘active’, demanding wear in my experience. With Hyde that blew my mind in a challenging, but good way. With Moon Bloom, I could quickly tell that it wasn’t for me and I probably would’ve liked this fragrance better if it was more subtle.

Then again, there are plenty of subtle tuberose/jasmine/ylang-ylang scents out there, so Moon Bloom is there for the die hards.
