Chris Collins has been on a roll when it comes to heavier, deeper scents, like Lust Oud Delice & Kingmaker Master Of Oud. Here too, we get quite a dark take on cherry that’s well executed.
The opening has a tinge of ever so slightly acidic cherry; like an artificial cherry lollipop. But soon, the smokier, woodier and sweeter tones take over. It retains that cherry hint, which is important to give some balance and levity and I’m surprised how well this type of almost candied cherry works here for me.
There’s a coziness to Savant – Manhattan Cherry. It reminds me of an old bar; old wooden furniture, some smokiness, some booziness. It grows in a familiar sweet cherry tobacco direction, without smelling directly like a Parfums de Marly Herod or a Scents Of Wood Plum In Cognac; although I do think it appeals to the same audience and especially Plum In Cognac kept coming to mind during the wear.
Heavy on the clove & cinnamon and woodiness, but I’m glad for the cherry and the boozy quality; they add a lot of character. It remains pleasant until the end, but when the last hints of brighter cherry fade, everything blends into one big accord of boozy, dried fruit, oak barrel, smokiness that doesn’t reinvent the wheel.
Overall, another well-done release by Chris Collins. Not as ‘out there’ as Kingmaker and in line with Lust Oud Delice as a ‘dark gourmand’; Savant to my nose being simulteanously less gourmand, but more comforting. Thumbs up.
