Triumph Of Bacchus was my favorite from the original releases by Argos, by a margin. However I’ve edited this review in 2025, to reflect my changing feelings towards it.

Truth be told, the opening can be a bit rough on the nose. It suffers to lesser extent from the same issues as the headache-inducing Mancera Red Tobacco, which it’s often compared to. Luckily, the Argos isn’t quite as grating, but the first half hour is rather pungent with a loud projection and sharpness coming from the apple tobacco combination.

Where this fragrances shines is in the drydown. It’s as if it goes from dry to wet tobacco and most importantly, the vanilla steals the show. Triumph Of Bacchus is one of those fragrances that has gotten significantly better and smoother after macerating further on the shelf at home for a year. The vanilla is way more prominent than it used to be to my nose and that does the composition a lot of good. That being said, after 2-3 more years, it’s become cloyingly sweet. Not just a little, but to the point that I actively didn’t enjoy wearing it anymore and sold my bottle.

It used to be in my rotation as a great tobacco scent, albeit a clear notch under my favorites like Herod and Enigma Pour Homme. I can still see why people would like it + I don’t know if newer bottles suffer the same growing sweetness that mine had over the years. It’s an outstanding performer to say the least and if you’re more into louder, attention-grabbing and sweet fragrances, Triumph Of Bacchus is one to have on your radar. Unfortunately, for me, it doesn’t work anymore.
