‘Elegance personified. Consider perfume a portrait of its wearer: the sound of her voice, her gaze, the way she plays cards. At once timeless and resonant with today, here is a scent that speaks of her innate sophistication. Charm that emanates from within, boldly depicted without; an expressive portrayal of modern grace. At the fore, an exuberant dose of Turkish rose — 400 flowers per 100ml bottle, no less. Beneath, a bed of patchouli heart imbued with sandalwood and frankincense. Portrait of a Lady was one of my first ever niche purchases in late 2019 and anno 2024, it’s still my favorite rose fragrance and my favorite Malle (with Noir Epices and Rose Tonnerre on its heels).
The opening is just the right balance of a vibrant rose, a jammy sweetness and a green overal floral and stemmy vibe. While it is very sweetness (and my bottle has gotten significantly sweeter over time), it’s not as cloying as for example Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud Satin Mood. That being said, it does deviate from the rose quite a bit and doesn’t stay as centered on it as one of its closest competitors for the best rose title, Matiere Premiere Radical Rose.
As it dries the sweetness grows, but so does the earthiness. Whereas the opening may lean floral, the drydown has a strong earthy and 100% unisex core with the patchouli becoming arguably the main player in the composition. The fruitiness lingers on throughout the wear and it’s overall a pretty bright and refreshing scent.
Performance on my skin is next to nuclear, which is the only reason why wearing it in high heat may require some constraint. I’d say this is ideal for Spring and early Autumn. Still one of my absolute favorites and a mainstay in my top 10 after almost 5 years of collecting.
