‘Imagining the ancient world of the Mokaya, this fragrance is a study in dark, earthy scents that evoke the tropical richness of dense, steaming jungles.’ – Teone Reinthal
Along with Kafka 2022, Mokaya Chocolatl is probably the darkest of the TRNP that I’ve tested so far. Straight from the opening you get this earthy, wet tobacco.
A patchouli-heavy tobacco, with definitely some chocolate nuances. That being said, while the scent is rather dark, it doesn’t wear too heavy. Scent-wise this goes in the direction of some of the Areej Le Dore (Agar de Noir for example maybe from memory), but Mokaya Chocolatl feels lighter and has more breathing room.
It seems to sit on the same kind of wood shavings-like sandalwood from Embers Renaissance. Aside from sweet, it’s also… fruity? in a yellow floral sense (even though neither are listed as notes).
The more the wear progresses, the more I lose tobacco and gain chocolate. Maybe, smoky chocolate with a hefty earthy patchouli base. If you don’t like patchouli at all, this will be an issue. I don’t always love patchouli, but at it’s most chocolate-like as here, it really works to make this a more mature gourmand.
I’m not sure I would call it gourmand actually; it’s definitely not resembling a straight up chocolate bar or anything and as with many of Teone Reinthal’s works, it has a ‘forest’ essence to me.
I enjoyed this one. It reminds me a tiny bit of Kafka 2022, but I like everything about Mokaya Chocolatl more (less cedarwood, more sweetness).
