Milk Orchid is a collaboration with Perfumerism.
‘Meet Milk Orchid, a new floral gourmand fragrance, co-created with Emma of @perfumerism. Her dream take on our iconic Milk scent, with shimmers of Fig Milk, Vanilla Orchid, and Magnolia. Drops for a limited time – exclusively in the Sephora app on 8/31 and globally on 9/2.’ – Commodity
‘This dreamy scent wraps you in a cozy-meets-floral-hug, blending creamy milk, soft musk, and sweet orchid for a vibe that’s equal parts comforting and chic. It’s warm, a little flirty, and totally addictive (think: your favorite cashmere sweater in scent form).’ – IPSY
As someone who’s not a fan of Commodity Milk, I was curious to see what Milk Orchid would have in store. Good news: it’s very different. Bad news: I don’t like it any better.
Milk Orchid is surprisingly un-gourmand for a good chunk of the wear. There’s some sweetness (a lot of it in the drydown) and definitely some milk-ish scent, but it’s heavy on the floral side and musky side. And those are done in a way that doesn’t work at all for me; Kayali Yum Pistachio-esque, airy, dry… I wouldn’t say harsh or feeling terrible to wear, but not milky or creamy either.
The fig aspect adds this greenish, semi-fruity contrast to the sweet dry side and it creates a clashing vibe that makes me think of sweet ‘clean’ products, like roomsprays, where it’s very sweet and artificial smelling, but with an inedible fresh tart tinge. It sort of clashes the way the Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male ‘vanillic, but aromatic’ mix never worked for me.
Scent is a moderate no, but it’s the whole aesthetic of it; the texture and perceived articial plasticness that makes it a strong no for me overall. Based on the sheer hype it received pre-launch already, I assume I’ll be in the minority, but I don’t see the appeal; Milk Orchid wears like a below-average Commodity, Kayali, baseline designer type of scent.
