I was excited to get my nose on Jeju. One Day has been one of my favorite brand discoveries, with their stellar Tea collection and Seoul being arguably my favorite vetiver fragrance at the time of writing. But I hadn’t tried a proper fresher, brighter fragrance from the brand prior to Jeju and I’d heard good things about Jeju from multiple people.

Fruity citrus scents can be tricky, as I often find them too be too vibrant, too cloyingly sweet to be refreshing. Yet, when they’re not, they can be too light, too watery to make an impression. Jeju walks the balance perfectly. It also adds a more cologne-ish touch to the composition that I wasn’t really expecting as I just heard this was a yuzu-citrus fragrance and never took in the notes before today.

It is quite vibrant and fruity, rather than just citrussy. Yuzu, grapefruit and bitter orange are the listed notes, but I could imagine something a tad sweeter like a mango or even pineapple here as well. Then again, it’s greener than all of those. It’s as if all the fruits used are very unripe and it results in a greener, but also more watery, crisp texture, rather than thicker impression of the citrus.

What makes Jeju so interesting is that the sweetness mostly seems to come from tomato leaf and basil; very divisive notes, but here they only add a minor tinge. They don’t have the astringent, earthiness or sharp green facets that sometimes come with them; it’s like a soft tomato leaf that adds a distinct savory sweet edge.

The combination makes this one of the classier citrus fragrances in my collection. I think with the inclusion of the basil and tomato leaf, there’s a nod to a style of traditional masculine leaning cologne in here, which instantly made my association for Jeju as much an office fragrance as an outdoorsy, Summer or beachy fragrance. Another gem from One Day in my book.
