I’m afraid it’s time for the Kayali fan club to cover their ears (eyes) again. One one hand, Fleur Majesty is a welcome departure from the vanillic, cotton candy ‘marshmallow’ Kayali trend, in favor of a much fresher, more acidic scent profile. On the other hand, I definitely don’t think it’s better.
In fact, while it’s definitely not my least favorite Kayali (that honor probably goes to Capri In A Bottle or Yum Pistachio Gelato | 33), this isn’t something I enjoy wearing. Unfortunately, because in theory it should be; I like rose, I like citrussy rose and I don’t always mind sweet rose. It’s been mostly compared to Parfums de Marly Delina Exclusif so far, but it feels like it’s lesser, deconstructed, slightly-off sibling, based on my faint memory of the Delina.
Frankly, with Fleur Majesty, none of the aspects are to my taste. The florals are non-descript, generic designer mush, the citrus reminds me of a cleaning product and the sweetness is a full-on candy store.
Initially, it’s the acidity kept coming to the forefront in the opening hour in ways that didn’t work out for me. Whereas Delina and many of its variants are very tart, here the tart quality just wears different. Less tart, more sweet. Listed fruity notes are pear, mandarin & peach, and I would say I mostly get the sweet and sour mandarin and no distinct pear or peach at all. Sharp, lemony and I guess there’s a soapy twist from the floral, but the combination makes for a hand soap at best and a cleaning product at worst.
Perhaps less to my liking is the overtaking by the sweetness that follows. The seemingly strong performing drydown based on my first time wearing feels like a one dimensional super sweet fruity candy. Which makes the name an interesting choice; I don’t find much rose for this entire drydown. There is a softer, floral tinge that still reads more like a soapy room spray or cleaner to my nose, but I have to look for it; it’s absolutely overshadowed by this sweet and sour cloud. More acidic ambroxan; with the praline-vanilla vibe being understated.
Overall, whereas with some of the previous Kayali’s, I knew up front that it wasn’t for me; here, I feel the theme could’ve been to my taste, but the result wasn’t. Fleur Majesty fully harks back to smelling like a better performing Zara cheapie on my skin and it’s one from the brand that I had higher hopes for. If you smelled Delina Exclusif or a fragrance similar to that, and thought: ‘I wish this was sweeter and fruitier, less floral and less mature’, then Fleur Majesty may be up your alley.
