Blue Mandarin is a little gem that I sampled, enjoyed and happened to find at a great discount right after. So I figured, why not pick it up for the Spring/Summer seasons.
For starters, Blue Mandarine is more mandarin, than it is blue. It’s a great take on a spicy citrus fragrance with a simple, yet complete rendition of what citrus has to offer. A sharp, zesty opening with the help of ginger tickles the nose. It has some green elements, both floral and woody, although not a full petitgrain scent (which I usually struggle with).
It starts of bright, but spicy and it has a similar air to the more retro (masculine) colognes, hence Blue Mandarine is often compared to Dior Eau Sauvage (not to be confused with Sauvage).
As it dries down and its spiciness warms up a bit, I was reminded of the Blue Curacao-inspired Des Clous Pour Une Pelure by Serge Lutens a bit, although maybe the ‘blue’ placed that idea in my mind.
This is an extrait de parfum, that feels full-bodied for this kind of scent. Although I must say that longevity is (inevitably) still what you’d expect from a citrus fragrance.
It doesn’t necessarily stand out and I don’t think we’ll see Blue Mandarine in my end of year top 10 list, but I bought this as a great, versatile scent for warmer weather and the office. Classy, but a little more modern than for example Eau Sauvage is. I expect I’ll wear this quite often.
