I sampled all the Bohoboco releases up to 2022. Interestingly enough, the fragrances that I had the highest expectations of, didn’t work for me (especially Coffee White Flowers), and in general the line was underwheling to me. But others I enjoyed more than I expected. My favorite was Yellow Rose Incense
As a rose lover, it’s no surprise that it was a favorite, but I’d rank this highly within my rose frame of reference as well.
The opening has some spices, but it’s not hiding the rose at all. From the first spray the most prominent scent is a bright, slightly acidic and fresh rose. It is also sweet, but in a fresh way, it’s not overly jammy, fruity or vanillic. There’s a tinge of green throughout the wear, that adds to keeping it floral. To get straight to the point: For something with incense in the name, I’m not sure how much incense I’m picking up on. However, the texture is very smooth, which can probably be attributed to the resinous nature. The undertone is more earthy patchouli to me, but it definitely has a lot of sweetness too.
Yellow Rose Incense reminds me quite closely of Frederic Malle Portrait Of A Lady (my absolute favorite rose) in many ways, but it’s sweeter and slightly different at every turn. The opening is less sparkling, less fruity. The texture is more buttery (almost like orris). Whereas the Malle goes from rose to more and more patchouli, the Bohoboco opens with patchouli, but it doesn’t get as earthy, so it’s more linear in that sense. I’m probably influenced by the color and name, but I picture yellow and green (I see rose, but also dandelions), whereas Portrait Of A Lady has more pink tones. Yet, they convey the same overall feeling and it’s beautiful.
Performance is excellent, the bottle and atomizer are great and the price point is solid, so overall Yellow Rose Incense is up there with the best rose fragrances I can recommend.
