A giveaway today (July 29) for Carner Helix!

MILESTONES

July is the first month ScentAdvice is going to reach 150K visits! Thanks to a huge amount of big new releases, it’s the most traffic in a single month so far.

There will be 24.000 fragrances in the database next week, I recently was able to add another 500.

The r/newfragrances Reddit group has crossed over 700 members.

DATABASE
Before adding many more brands or features, I’m going through all of the existing brands on the site in the upcoming month to clean things up (see last bullet point), add store links & get an inventory of which of them still need to be completed.

So far, I’ve been going through most of letters A to F. I’ve added a lot of ‘shop this brand’ buttons (mostly commissioned, but I’ve also started linking directly to brands and stores without commission, especially for smaller niche brands). From those letters I still have to finish the databases for the following brands: 4711, Abercrombie & Fitch, Boucheron, DKNY, Emanuel Ungaro, Escada, Fueguia 1833.

Recently I’ve added/completed the following brands: Elizabeth Arden, Fendi, 4160 Tuesdays, Annayake, Eau D’Italie, D’Otto, Bybozo, Arte Profumi, Art Meets Art, Mystikum, Boka, Chronotope, Usual Parfums, La Perla, Comptoir Sud Pacifique, Fischersund, Valois, Shishl, Iggywoo, Sarah Jessica Parker.

TERMINOLOGY
In going through the existing database, I’m also removing some unwanted (old) formatting, links to my old Instagram, different fonts used etc.

More importantly, I’ve made some decisions on how certain notes are listed or combined them. A. because some fit the minimal aesthetic of the site better, B. because it can be confusing to use multiple terms for the same note and C. because some info is largely irrelevant or scam-like. Examples:

Everlasting Flower will be Immortelle everywhere
Olibanum will be Frankincense everywhere
Violet Leaf will just be Violet
Bergamot Essence or Oil will just be Bergamot (only absolutes get a mention)
Sicilian Lemon will just be Lemon

The point of removing the place of origin, is because I often find it irrelevant. Either all the ingredients come from that one region anyway or it’s just the basic moniker picked on Fragrantica or Parfumo without any confirmation that it’s supposed to be from that region. Most of the time, brands will use a mix of ingredients and synthetics and just call it a ‘ceylon cinnamon’, when it only contains a miniscule amount of the real deal. In most cases, it adds no value to the reader. I’m keeping the different rose types, oud regions, sometimes jasmine, vetiver or cedarwood. Especially keeping the latter when there are multiple versions of the same note listed in one note breakdown. Those examples usually also have more meaning, as people may get more of an idea when it’s an Indian Oud or a Cambodian Oud used.

I have been able to replace most of these terms with a plugin script, but not everything. Manually cleaning up 24.000 posts isn’t really going to work either, but there is and will be some progress made and those choices will be implemented on newly added releases moving forward for more simplicity and cohesion.
