I decided to add a sample of the rather popular Sandalwood Cologne when I ordered my Geo. F. Trumper beard oils… and ordered a bottle 3 minutes after applying the sample.
As far as ‘traditional’ masculine leaning colognes go, this is among my favorites. That being said, it’s not that much of a ‘colgone’ style, which is not a style I often go for. Sandalwood Cologne minimizes the lavender (and clary sage) and even keeps the citrus opening in check, in favor of a very spicy and warmer scent from the start.
It has a tiny bit of the ‘old-school’ cologne freshness with the bergamot and lemon, but it’s sweeter than most. I guess that there’s cinnamon and clove in the spices and that’s more indicative of what to expect with this fragrance. The scent profile is very similar to Chanel Egoiste.
What I love most about Sandalwood Cologne is it’s texture. It grows tremendously smooth and well-rounded underneath the layer of sharper and dry spiciness. It’s not ‘milky’ per se, but more like a creamy mush.
I think that’s it’s sandalwood namesake, which behavior actually reminds me more of the pure Mysore oil I’ve smelled than in many sandalwood alternatives often found at much higher prices. It’s subtle and slightly pine-like, but it’s carrying the scent, resulting in a sweet, spicy woody drydown. It’s pretty much Christmas in a bottle to me.
Longevity was okay, better than I expected and at its price (€47/50ml when I purchased it), it’s a no-brainer. For most of the wear Sandalwood Cologne is very noticeable for myself too, which is a nice bonus. It’s definitely one of my better purchases and probably the best fragrance alongside Guerlain Homme EDP that I ever bought retail for under €50. Now I just need Geo F. Trumper to turn Sandalwood Cologne into one of their beard oils as well.
