‘The scent of Safari, just like many other Ralph Lauren fragrances is inspired with American life style. Safari symbolizes another American myth, the call of the wild planes, the spirit of freedom and adventure, the joy of discovery. For all that Safari has enjoyed a great success in the States, just like the Polo and the game of Polo as those are topics that are dear. Safari for women is a floral aroma with light breeze scented by grasses, freedom and romance of open vast space.’ – Ralph Lauren

Safari definitely marked a highlight in my ‘vintage’ journey so far. This is relatively modern, released in 1990 (or 1989 via other sources), by none other than Dominique Ropion. I’ve gone through a miniature, but just had to have a full size. Was lucky to find a swap for this sprayer + refill option.

The opening leaned a bit green for my personal taste. In a slightly grassy, very floral, but also soapy way. Despite not being my taste instantly, it was not a kind of green that I’d dislike (which means the galbanum, at least in older batches is kept in check). It feels like a fun, not overly serious fragrance straight away.

The fruitiness I like more. It’s executed in a pretty clean, uplifting way; more so unripe fruits or the freshly washed skins. Not overly juicy or vibrant, keeping it somewhat transparent (which in the case of fruitiness is usually a plus in my book). It’s a different smell, but gives me the same playful feeling that Lancome Poeme does (Safari being my preference overall though).

The magic happens as it dries down and at least with somewhat older bottle, that seems to transition quickly. A beautiful mossy and sandalwoody, warm and full-bodied base comes through.

It’s very honeyed on my skin and combined it becomes a cozy, very smooth wear, with a hint of (mostly) peach. I seem to get a lot more honey and less green spicy and less powdery texture than I’ve read in some other reviews. Overall a super enjoyable wear to me.
