‘Invoked by Damask rose (Damask Rose) and the enrapturing Oud, this perfume marks the beginning of the season of bloom and charm, and is here to mesmerize. The clean, smoky whiff of the royal opening of the Oud incense is nicely segued with tonnes of plucked fresh roses from all over the globe. The addition of silkenly layers to the blend enhance its regality due to the wrapping of Lawsonia Inermis (henna) in Saffron. A macho speck rendered by the moisty animalic undertones raise the intrigue through layers of subtle sweetness and traditional sandalwood spice, making the whole experience a harmonious and charismatic one. Bringing in the touches of the Turkish, Bulgarian and the Ispartan, the intricacy of layers interlaced with lucidity makes ‘Oud Rosa’, packaged in a cutely cut bottle of 30ml, a classic and magnificient gem ever, to be creatively innovated from the house.’ – Dixit & Zak

Straight away Oud Rosa differs from any rose oud fragrance know. I think the the main things seperating it, is how much the sweetness is kept in check and the way they captured the rose itself, as well as the earthiness.

The rose is my favorite element; it’s subtle, but natural. Not sweet or jammy, but rather reserved, green, earthy, slightly acidic (especially in combination with the citrus). The sweetness comes mainly from a honey accord, but it feels separate from the rose. It’s a combination I’ve not encountered much; I think Amouage’s Rose Aqor attar is in this direction, but that’s much less earthy. Saffron is clearly there, but it’s not as overpowering as in a lot of other fragrances.

There’s a combination of ouds used and, as someone who’s not an oud-connoisseur, I was surprised. To my nose Oud Rosa smells more of earthiness, similar to patchouli, rather than what I expect from ouds (I later encountered a similar vibe in Areej Le Dore The History Of Indonesian Oud). The woodiness and a slight smokiness is present and it grows throughout the wear, but I get the ground moreso than the trees. I spoke to someone over at the brand and he pointed me to the listed Lawsonia Inermis; the henna plant, which seems to give off what I’m smelling. It makes for an interesting, quite heavy, mature and in my opinion masculine leaning scent.

While not animalic or anything at all, it has an almost gothic-quality that borders on daring for my taste. There is a thick, yet smooth, pasty texture I love in the drydown, that could be attributed some some of the ouds, but possibly also the sandalwood used.

Oud Rosa is a quality, substantial fragrance as you would expect from the notes and the reputation brands like Dixit & Zak carry with them. I like it a lot, although it’s more intrigue and exploration, rather than love at first sniff.
