‘I imagined this new fragrance as a tribute to blandness. A floral musk with a minimal and creamy composition, like a break in the tumult of a fast-paced world. This fragrance, indisputably comforting, wraps the senses in a veil of softness and invites introspection. “Ode to Dullness”, celebrates the apparent banality of everyday life and the poetry of small nothings, simplicity in art, and the ordinary in sublime. Velvety notes of Star Anise, Cashmere Flower, Sandalwood and Tonka Bean complement each other and form a soothing trail.’ – Juliette Has a Gun
A scent like Ode To Dullness is hard to review, or at least, to say much about it. It’s extremely simple. A soft, musky skin scent, slightly in the direction of their Not a Perfume. However, with more time, this one does stand-out over some of these molecular-type of fragrances and I quite like it.
The opening is stunning, but it fades in 2 minutes. Creamier, citrussy, musky but sweet. Tonka bean heavy, which I was excited for. It opens very pleasant.
However, it vanishes and white musks completely take over. From a couple minutes in, until the end of the wear, this feels like 90% white musks and 10% sandalwood to me.
Soft like a baby product, but heavy on the laundry detergent vibes. It reminded me of the drydown of Eight & Bob Original, but more airy. As a whole composition, less interesting than something like the Eight & Bob or for example Maison Violet Cycle 001. Just a very pleasant fresh linen scent, however I’m not sure if that’s enough for me to want to wear it as a perfume.
That being said, it feels great and it’s definitely one of the better JHAG for me.
