‘Expand your fragrance range by falling under the spell of mysterious amber. Myrrh, like a testament from antiquity, adds an irresistible charm to this unique Tom Ford fragrance. Myrrh Mystere combines the essence of myrrh, one of the most iconic ingredients used in perfumes since ancient times, with sophisticated ultra vanilla. Amber Woody scent that emits a rich and soft aura of light.’ – Tom Ford

Myrrh is having a moment in 2023 and Tom Ford is releasing, what could be one of the better renditions of it, on paper. Does it hold up? Short answer: I can’t fault it in any way and it’s a good fragrance… but I don’t love it.

There’s more freshness in the opening than I expected. It balances a brighter refreshing facet with the sort of dry, pungent woody tones underneath. Almost feels aromatic, like a hint of celery.

Within minutes it becomes sweeter. I heard things about this being very smoky, harsh, sticky, but most of that I don’t really experience. This is soft, balmsamic and quite easy to wear after the first minutes. Of course it is smoky, but in an accessible, incense way. More like cold and smooth smokiness, nothing daring to my nose. No surprises to be found here.

It’s not a candied myrrh like the Le Labo Myrrhe 55, despite being sweet. There’s an aromatic tinge to me here. Like a green, but sweet myrrh. Much more in a liquorice direction. Not unlike Amouage OPUS XIV Royal Tobacco (which overall reminded me of this one the most), but the Tom Ford is more easy going. I’d say the Le Labo leans traditionally feminine quite far, whereas the Tom Ford is unisex to potentially a tad masculine leaning.

The more the wear progress the more you get that ‘church’ incense, but also more of a gummy-textured, sweeter resin. Almost earthy more than woody in the base (patchouli-esque).

Sidenote: Apparently this is similar to Tom Ford’s Ebene Fume, which I only smelled in stores at the time of writing, so I can’t comment on that.

Overall, this wears truly nice and smooth for a ‘darker’ fragrance. Not too sweet or daring. Not the most beautiful or most exciting fragrance profile for me either though. Myrrhe Mystere is sort of an understated and versatile fragrance for its style and one that I think plenty of people will enjoy. I wouldn’t mind wearing occasionally, but it doesn’t do enough for me and I found it forgettable if I’m being honest
