Straight away, Musc de Sables opens with a strong, but almost milky patchouli note. It’s brightened up by the mandarin and ambergris, but there’s not really a pronounced citrussy aspect to my nose. It mostly reminds me of a balsamsic or even candle-like sweet iris with a hint of non-acidic orange. It’s not heavy or dark, yet it feels dense and it exudes a warmth.
As someone who loves iris, this is a love at first sniff, but it does transition quickly. As it dries the sweetness keeps on coming through. A cleaner, white musky quality remains, but the milky sweetness becomes the main player.
I get hints of Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur or even Shalimar and a fresher, cleaner iris like Stephane Humbert Lucas Panthea Iris here, with the tiniest hint of an aquatic breeze added.
After a couple of hours it turns into a more conventional, vanilla skin scent. It’s beautiful, but from the Les Indemodables that I’ve tried so far, it feels the most familiar.
