‘Once upon a time… A middle summer garden afternoun. The calm of a sunny nap. And the children’s snack. Jany. She’s getting busy in the kitchen, between sugar and flour. What she loves to prepare, above all other delicacies, is tarte tatin. The butter melts on the glass. She drops grains of brown sugar into it, in the silence of a fine, icy rain. Its scent swirls around the room, echoes to the veranda, travels to the path. Baked apples and cinnamon sticks fade into the exhalations of puff pastry. Then come caramel, almonds and vanilla, powerful aromas that linger into the evening. Antoine’s daughter, Jany carries the fragrance of his recipes, cakes, madeleines and cookies. An original childhood pastry, Jany delivers the aromatic memories of all our unforgettable delicacies. Here’s to your emotions.’ – SORADORA
Sora Dora has expanded their range in 2023 with Jany & Mallow; both of which are rather sweet scents. I have a strong preference for Jany.
Jany has a very strong apple pie scent. It also reminds me a lot of Pickwick’s Turkish Apple tea.
I quite like this opening. It’s a bit brighter than most sweet and spicy apple pie fragrances (a la Kilian Angels Share) with a real fruitiness (apricot, peach and plum are listed alongside the apple). The big differences between this and Angels’ Share is the more prominent apple and overall more gourmand, less rugged vibe.
You get a lot of a toasted/roasted, popcorn-esque quality in Jany. A few minutes in, this gets very nutty. However, it’s not as harsh as in many other toasted fragrances, like Sora Dora’s own Red.
I wish the apple opening lasted even longer, but as it dries down, it becomes more and more of a sweet, pastry gourmand (with milky and buttery textures) and less and less of the fruitiness comes through. Super smooth lactonic base, which wears nicely, but can be a bit cloying to me.
Still, this is one of the better, if not best, fragrance from Sora Dora to me. A true gourmand that does enough to stand out from the pack, while remaining quite mass appealing. If you’re looking for a treat, Jany definitely provides a fun sweet option.
