‘Hypnorange is a love letter to audacity, a symphony of light and shadow. It opens with blazing notes of sweet orange, grapefruit, and bitter orange, exploding on the skin like fireworks, kissed by the creamy sweetness of coconut. The heart is a rebellion, where the delicate whispers of orange blossom collide with the smoky poetry of tobacco. As the sun sets, the base envelops you in a golden haze of vanilla, benzoin, black amber, and musk, creating a trail that feels like a secret you long to keep. Hypnorange redefines citrus with sophistication and attitude, a scent for dreamers, rebels, and ardent lovers.’ – Coreterno

When I smelled this fragrance on paper, there seemed to be a great citrus in Hypnorange. I always enjoy a citrus, but I perceived a stronger, petitgrain-like quality that was keeping me from instantly loving it; yet I was excited to test it more thoroughly. After wearing it on skin, I can only say that Hypnorange is nothing like it was on paper and frankly, it’s nothing like what I’d heard about it.

Whereas the greener, sharper petitgrain (or bitterness) feels toned down on skin, I was also surprised to find much more of a floral, orange blossom core. It’s way more floral than just the citrussy opening than I gave it credit for on paper. More importantly, it’s not nearly as citrussy and bright as I thought it would be, as the ambery sweetness comes through almost immediately.

I saw quite a few first impressions from people who smelled this at the Esxence exhibition in Milan, where it was first presented and kept hearing how great of a fresh, bright, Summery fragrance this was going to be. But in my experience, this is closer to a Maison Crivelli Oud Maracuja or Fugazzi Passionfroudh style fragrance than a Summery citrus. Except with a different type of citrus fruitiness. I’m actually also reminded of several of the post-2022 releases by Bortnikoff, which kept combining sweet and sharp citrus with heavier woody bases.

Orange and orange blossom flavored candy on a resinous, but harsher background, with quite a lot of smokiness, that feels as much Autumn as it does Spring/Summer. There’s even a slightly camphorous tree resin cutting through to my nose. All punchy and vibrant, in-your-face as far as styling goes. Maybe it’s because it deviates so far from the initial impression, that I got off on the wrong foot with Hypnorange, but I can’t say that I’m a big fan of this one at all.
