‘Goodmorning Midnight takes on a brighter, more celebratory spirit. This vibrant scent layers Thai oud with lush rose, before revealing an unexpected note of wild strawberry. Radiant and playful, it captures a mood of festivity and adventure, whether shared with others or savoured in solitude.’ – Bottega Veneta

I finally had a chance to briefly sniff the higher-end Bottega collection and I must say, on first impression, they seemed above average. Goodmorning Midnight is the one that has garnered some attention (via a mention by artist Kehlani), so it’s one that I picked out to get a sample of for further testing.
And I was quite surprised. The fruitiness; strawberry, lychee is very understated, compared to what I was expecting. This is not a commercial, mass appealing scent at all, instead it’s a rather traditional, hefty rose-oud.
In that sense, it’s actually generic. I do not smell strawberry, as much as I do the usual rose-saffron-oud with leathery touches. But for that style of rose-oud, it’s actually convincingly rough. And I mean rough in a good sense. This is not polished to appeal to the casual shopper, but dares to stick to an actually oudy, slightly skanky, but mostly leathery core. Perhaps a notch less sophisticated than the Louis Vuitton rose-ouds, which again, is not meant here in a bad sense; I think this scent profile needs a bit of an edge. This is more old batch Oud Ispahan than the current ones. One of the better rose-ouds that I’ve smelled recently (although topped by Ormonde Jayne Bijou Zafran).
Nothing new here as far as the profile and I think a more pronounced strawberry may have been more interesting, but a nice execution and one that I wouldn’t necessarily have expected in this collection.
