Inspired by the quote “Set your life on fire. Seek those who fan your flames” by Rumi, FAN YOUR FLAMES, launched in 2016, is another global hit of NISHANE. Underlining the desire of people to be surrounded by the friends who would encourage them no matter what they want to do with their life, the original formula offers a blend of notes that evoke a warm and inviting atmosphere. The new offering FAN YOUR FLAMES X is designed to soften the flames of the original bestseller by a gentle touch of tropical flavors. The fragrance opens with a combination of coconut, rum, and lentisque, which gives off a sweet and tropical vibe. The heart of the fragrance features a mix of tobacco, tonka bean, and thyme oil, which creates a rich and spicy aroma. The base notes consist of cedar, oakmoss, and patchouli, which provide a woody and earthy finish to the fragrance. This scent is a great choice for those who love warm and comforting fragrances with a touch of exoticism.’ – Nishane
I actually never worn the original Fan Your Flames on skin, only in store. On first impression it had too much of a roasted impression. I heard this is the one with the biggest changes in the X (also a different perfumer) and it does wear a lot different from what I would’ve expected from it. I also find it very lackluster and it could be the worst that Nishane has to offer in my opinion.
This is still a strong fragrance, but not as harsh and roasted as what I expected. Instead, it’s overly fruity, sweet and a bit boozy. The overall feeling is that of bubblegum to me; very big-designer-release type of sweetness and fruitiness. An exotic twist, which in the air is quite nice, the same goes for the coconut itself. I think I would like this a more when I smell this in passing on someone else. When smelling it on myself more up close however, it just doesn’t work at all for me and it smells like a more cloying, less-warm weather appropriate version of JPG Le Beau. Both have coconut and I figured the comparisons people made were arbitrary (like saying everything with pineapple smells like Aventus). But it’s not even the coconut or the Le Beau specifically; this ends up smelling like it would fit in next to the (equally cloying) Le Male Elixir as well or maybe a Hugo Boss release. It’s the tropical tinge that saves it from being unwearable to me.
As mentioned, I did not really remember Fan Your Flames, but this X version might be my least favorite offering that I’ve smelled from Nishane overall, not just in this new line. Even if you like that style of fruity sweetness with a hint of bubblegum (many people do, given how much those big designers are selling), this is an unnecessary more expensive alternative.
