I’ve tried Arcanum in a set with Lautus and Opulentas and for me, Arcanum is the star of the set. It’s one that’s hard not to love.
My first impression was that this reminded me of Herod, with a bit of other Parfums de Marly’s DNA, and that still holds true, but I definitely get the nuances that make Arcanum stand on it’s own. I get a fruity tobacco vibe, even though that’s not showing in the notes, besides osmanthus, which can get fruity.
Importantly, I did get the coconut in my first impression and that’s a subtle, but a nice touch. Now I’ve worn it more, I start seeing it more and more as an amber accord, with a heavy sweetness. I almost get a saltiness, like a salted caramel. I’d say it’s more gourmandish than Herod, so be prepared for the sweetness.
I’m happy it’s not a sugary sweetness though, it’s more on a thicker vanilla side. In general, Arcanum is very rich and opulent. I’m actually not sure what concentration this is, but it feels like an extrait. It’s not very loud, but it’s a thick scent cloud and it’s quite dark. Especially later in the wear, when more of the woodiness comes through. It’s a very sensual, smooth, dark and sweet fragrance, that really works in colder weather.
Saying it’s the same as Herod is not doing it justice, but it does give a good indication; if you like one, you will like the other. Arcanum is more complex and a bit longer lasting on my skin. With the performance, the presentation and the scent, Arcanum is definitely one from the brand I can recommend and I think it’s a safe bet if you know the general style that you’re looking for
