‘Animalique plugs into the common element in all humanity: our authentic essence and primal instincts. The feeling of euphoric dancing under disco lights, of biological, illogical attraction, of being carried away by the great sweep of vibration. Fresh top notes of lemon and bergamot give way to a warm floral heart of mimosa and violet, before the fragrance takes its final plunge into the feral atmosphere of suede, amber and Tobacco. A scent in which inhibition shatters, Animalique is an ode to the many-selved you that is always, forever, a story unfolding.’ – Byredo

      THOUGHTS

Animalique is animalic as in leathery. But for a leather-ish, it’s anything but daring or ‘animalic’. It is unexpectedly beautiful, and one of the best Byredo’s that I’ve put my nose on.

I get a powdery suede straight away. Kind of old school, floral, clean, powdery. I’m surprised there is no iris or heliotrope in the notes for this. Throughout this fragrance’s texture is very powdery.

Within minutes it becomes very soft, smooth and it sweetens remarkably quick. The amber accord in the base is already right next to the suede after several minutes.

As mentioned, the opposite of what I’d consider ‘animalic’. This is a leather that people who don’t like leather fragrances can love. It reminds me a little bit of the sweeter leather from Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather, but it has a more feminine leaning powdery floral air on top of it. The more the wear progresses, the more floral it gets, with a strong (parma) violets mid, which I think would be the most divisive facet of this fragrance.

To my nose, Animalique smells like a make-up bag and even goes almost gourmand. It loses the leather completely in the drydown. As someone who often finds leather fragrances overbearing and as someone who likes sweet (especially in this powdery, non-candy or fruity manner), Animalique hits the spot.
