‘An orchestral symphony inspired by the Royal Opera House. Exotic and sensual, bold yet mysterious. Angham opens up with seductive notes of spices followed by a warm dark base of amber, sandalwood, and leather.’ – Oman Luxury
I tried Angham in 2022 and at the time it already was my favorite OmanLuxury. It borders on being challenging for me, but never crosses that line and here’s why.
Angham is dark. It’s a dry and spicy, dense woody opening. You get a combination of apple, spices and wood that reminds me a bit of OmanLuxury’s own Oud Aquilaria (which in turn reminds me of Frederic Malle Promise). There’s something in Angham (I presume the jasmine has a say in it), that makes me think me of a brooding, smoky, warm and strong tea (the same feeling I always get from Amouage Jubilation XXV).
In the drydown I get a lot of smoke and it’s more linear, but it’s not unpleasant to me. The scent actually reminds me of cigarettes, still in their packs, mixed with a hint of fruitiness.
What I get more from the bottle than I did when I sampled it, is leather. There’s a dark black leather that I picture. Not all the time; some wafts I get more saffron and leather, but most of the time it’s smoke and woods.
Emilie Bevierre-Copperman prevents the smoke and leather from deterring me by keeping Angham sweet and in a strange way, also smooth (not a surprise perhaps, as this is my third fragrance of her in the collection, after Van Cleef & Arpels Bois D’Iris and The Different Company Majaina Sin).
It turns into a sweet heavy smokiness, somewhere in between tobacco and leather, in the way Carner Sandor 70’s does. It doesn’t smell like most other sweet tobacco scents though; perhaps a hint of Parfum D’Empire Ambre Russe, but I find Angham more smoky. An excellent, heavier fragrance.
