‘Ambergris is a scent any frag lover must smell. You cannot not know its fragrance, nor can you fully appreciate ‘amber’ perfumes without a taste of the real thing.
The scent of shells, of the ocean or a salty evening breeze, of walking on the beach at the point where the seawater flows ashore and foam-covered waves make your feet sink in the sand. It’s this fusion of scents, this olfactory montage of seawater, sea sand, and the ocean air around you that you miss out on if you’ve never smelled ambergris.
Contrary to popular belief, ambergris doesn’t smell ‘animalic’. It doesn’t have the oomph of musk or the piercing sweetness of castoreum. The way it’s created is totally different, floating on top the deep ocean surface for who knows how long (months, years…), then washing up on the beach to dry under the sun, mistaken for rock for who knows how long (months, years…) finally to be spotted for what it is – one of the four most sought-after and precious ingredients in all of perfumery.
You see, you’re not just missing out on its unique salty seashell sweetness, but on how ambergris makes everything it touches smell better. In this case, thirteen-years-aged Mysore sandalwood…
Raw ambergris and Mysore are by themselves rarities, expensive to obtain, and precious enough to store separately. Crushed Jamaican beach-combed ambergris infused in Mysore is to scent junkies what a fat slice of cheesecake is to a sweet tooth. Additive, delectable, and totally worth it.
Ambergris, along with musk, is the most widely marketed term in perfumery. It’s everywhere. Ambra this, Ambre that. Of course, it’s all synthetic and smells nothing like what you’ve got here. That’s exactly why having ambergris engraved in your scent palette is a must. It not only lets you spot the fakes, but lets you appreciate how miraculous the real thing is. Once you’ve smelled real musk and real amber, the bulk of mainstream perfumes will smell bland, cloying, and just… bad.
Many will prefer to stay in La-la land to enjoy a spray of laundry detergent, posing as perfume. But if you’re ready to experience the real material, your olfactory journey will become so much richer. Your senses will become honed and fine-tuned, and the joy and satisfaction you get from them so much more.
Ambra ’92 puts the ambergris at center stage. There will be many times throughout your wear when you’ll wonder if there’s even any sandalwood in here. The seashell sweetness and the scent of wet salty ocean rock come to the surface crisp and clean, as if the Mysore has somehow retreated. But it’s there. And you’ll smell the white cream waft up now and then, as if to not disturb the serenity gained from all those years of floating atop the deep blue before finally coming to rest on your skin. Incredible, isn’t it?
