‘Loved around the world, those who smell Amber Aoud fall victim to its spell. The classic blend of Rose, Saffron and Oud transcends into pure olfactive perfection as sweet Benzoin and Fig counter a salty Ambergris base. Like capturing lightning inside a bottle, the beauty of Amber Aoud lies in its balance: A symphony of sweet, spicy, salty and woody tones embrace you in the enchanting experience known as “The Amber Aoud Effect”. The distinctly recognisable beauty of Amber Aoud is impossible to forget. Beloved across countries and cultures, its unmistakable appeal is in its enticing, exotic style which pays homage to the traditional methods and style of Middle Eastern perfumery. Employing legendary Gum Resins which have been used in perfumery for millennia, Cinnamon, Saffron and Benzoin create a base of unparalleled softness and warmth, where Rose de Mai and Fig dance on top and lend their gentle sweetness. Enveloping fragrance fans in a cloud of olfactive majesty, the popularity of Amber Aoud is not without justification.’ – Roja Parfums

One of Roja’s most famous fragrances and for good reason. Amber Aoud is a staple for rose-oud type fragrances. I’ve tried it several times over the years, but never reviewed it, until I wore it from my brother’s bottle today and figured it deserved some brief thoughts.

The rose here is the star of the show for me. It’s citrussy, but rich and vibrant. Not quite jammy and sweet, but also not light, airy or green. A nice middle ground, with the citrus edge being one of my favorite aspects in perfumery. It reminds me a lot of Jazeel Ghala, but that stays more earthy and is a tad less clean.

Because on my skin, after a while, Amber Aoud goes quite soapy. It’s a good contradiction as you do have that sweet, warm, ambery oudy backdrop, but the florals go rather soapy, instead of also going sweet (as for example in Matiere Premiere Radical Rose). It makes Amber Aoud a more lively and dynamic than some other rose-ouds such as the beloved Dior Oud Ispahan, which is missing that bright and acidic tinge.

One of my personal favorites from Roja, although after this, I did fall for & purchased Taif Aoud as I may prefer that slightly. Taif Aoud being even brighter, so a bit more versatile in warm weather for me. Either way, you can’t go wrong with Amber Aoud.
